MENUMENU

5.5 Absorption Cooling

Cooling or refrigeration refers to a direct process end use in which heat energy is used to create cooling. Conventional equipment includes chillers and absorption cooling equipment. This is shown in a schematic in Figure 5-7.

5.5.1 Process Uses

Major applications of commercial & industrial cooling include:

  1. Space conditioning,
  2. Refrigerated storage of unfrozen foods,
  3. Frozen foods,

  4.  Refrigeration to change the chemical structure of food,
  5.  Freeze drying,
  6.  Industrial process air conditioning, and
  7. Refrigeration in the petroleum and chemicals industries (reaction heat removal, gas separations, condensation of gases, separations, solidifications, humidity control, etc.).
