5.5 Absorption Cooling
Cooling or refrigeration refers to a direct process end use in which heat energy is used to create cooling. Conventional equipment includes chillers and absorption cooling equipment. This is shown in a schematic in Figure 5-7.
5.5.1 Process Uses
Major applications of commercial & industrial cooling include:
- Space conditioning,
- Refrigerated storage of unfrozen foods,
- Frozen foods,
- Refrigeration to change the chemical structure of food,
- Freeze drying,
- Industrial process air conditioning, and
- Refrigeration in the petroleum and chemicals industries (reaction heat removal, gas separations, condensation of gases, separations, solidifications, humidity control, etc.).
